For several years, I had the idea of capturing the mystical sight of fireflies floating through the forests in Germany during late June. Due to light pollution and pesticides this species becomes more and more endangered. I was amazed at the biology of these little bugs, taking them three years to mature through different forms to end their life in the grand finale of a colorful and mystical mating ritual.

Standing in the quiet forest at night, watching more and more tiny yellow lights slowly appear out of nowhere, created a magical and at times eerie atmosphere. As I admired the fireflies dancing through the darkness, I tried hard not to think about the wild boars that were almost certainly wandering nearby as well.

The nights I spent in the forest during that summer reminded me of the exciting night walks I used to take through the woods as a child. There was the same sense of wonder, curiosity, and just a hint of unease—feelings that made every sound and every flicker of light seem like part of an unforgettable adventure.

In the past, I photographed the fireflies using long exposures, resulting in light trails—beautiful at times, but often chaotic and messy. In summer 2025, I decided to take a different approach. I wanted to capture them in a way similar to the breathtaking photos I had seen of Japanese fireflies. However, there was a challenge: German fireflies behave differently from their Japanese and American relatives. While those species blink rhythmically, ours emit a constant, steady glow. This left me with a puzzle to solve.

Eventually, I drew inspiration from astrophotography. When photographing star trails, I typically capture a series of single frames and stack them to create the sweeping arcs of the night sky. This connection sparked an idea. What if I used a similar technique for fireflies? So, I set out to experiment and succeeded in collecting images for my little project „Whispers of Light“.

Summer 2025 was especially good for photographing fireflies as there was an abundance of them. I hope I will be able to add to this collection over the years to come.
