Story behind the picture: "On the other side" (Ireland, 2023)

This picture is an areal shot of the Burren karst region in Ireland. Already during my first visit in Ireland back in 2009 this alien landscape fascinated me a lot, so that I made a mental note to come back one day and spend some more time here for photography. After many years in 2023 I finally got my chance and this time I brought my drone along to explore the cracks in the limestone also from a birds eye view.

Already from the ground the rock formations, cracks in the limestone and arrangement of boulders caught my eye. From the ground I could only see the boulders in front of the dry stone wall. I was very excited to fly my drone to see what was going on on the other side of the wall. I hoped that with an areal view it would be possible to find order in the chaos of cracks and rocks.

Looking down on the scene from the air I was quite happy to find a second group of boulders on the other side of the wall, quite similar to the one I could already see from the ground. It immediately became clear to me that I wanted to include the classic Irish dry stone wall as a dividing element between the two groups of boulders. Looking at the boulders I couldn’t help but think, that quite often in life we do not know what is going on on the other side of a wall and that despite differences in the details, it sometimes can be surprising similar.
